Ofesi Community Irrigation Project (Khamalidyetsa CBO)

Jun 12, 2026

In 2023, Khamalidyetsa CBO found in Mphomwa TA implemented an irrigation project using 15 treadle pumps with the aim of improving the lives of 87 families by increasing their annual income from an estimated $100 to at least $400. A total of 87 families, about 156 individuals including children, women, men, and the elderly are now enjoying improved food security. They are producing tomatoes and various vegetables and focusing more on agricultural fieldwork through the use of treadle pumps and water pumps. The project has enhanced the group’s capacity to tackle irrigation-related issues and manage irrigation projects effectively. Membership in Ofesi has expanded, as non-members are now eager to join and benefit from the treadle pump initiative. The accomplishment of this project is a source of pride, honor, and motivation for the beneficiaries. They publicly acknowledged that the success of the treadle pump project is the result of their own actions and commitment. Currently, the group is discussing further steps to improve food sources, such as cultivating maize fields to support a food loan project, thereby extending benefits to more members. The treadle pumps have also enabled beneficiaries to increase their cultivated land. About 50% of them have expanded from just ¼ acre to ½ acre, while others have reached up to 1 acre depending on land availability. Overall, the cultivated area has grown from 4 hectares to 6 hectares—a 50% increase. This expansion has led to a 50% rise in crop yields, further strengthening food security and income generation for the community.
